What I Wish I Knew Before I Took My First Cruise
Today, I make my living writing and talking about cruises, but just over a decade ago, I took my first trip ever. In the dozens of cruises since, I've learned a lot, and there is plenty that I remember thinking before the first cruise that was just plain wrong, and other things that I just had no idea about.
That's why I'm pulling back the curtain and sharing what no one told me before I took my first cruise. From pricing to formal night... from sales pitches to the crowd onboard, this is what I wish I knew before I sailed.

If you have an allergy or sensitivity like dairy, it’s important to add this information when completing the reservation. If eating in the dining room, your staff will be prepared with other options and will allow you to preorder the next days meals. Finally, you can bring a carton of non dairy milk onboard. The ships have soy milk and you can ask for a cup anytime. Having your preferred beverage is just as easy.

**Warning** Young women, practice due diligence of ship's crew members. Human trafficking (by way of nefarious workers on the ship kidnapping girls, and selling them to pimps at various ports). This has been featured on crime shows.

You have to pay for everything worth doing on cococay!!! It’s not included in your cruise ticket price. The thrill water park cost our family of 5 $900. The zip line was $100 a person. The air balloon was $159 per person. It’s fucking disgusting how much we paid. We will never go on another RCL cruise again. The price gouging is bullshit.

We actually like the higher room, deck 12 or higher. Less people to deal with and much much quieter. Also, the newer ships have a better elevator system. We stayed on the Firenze which can hold 4200 passengers and it never felt crowded at the elevators. You select the floor you want and most of the time you get your very own elevator going directly to that floor. Most everything else I agree on.

I was a sworn true believer not to pay for food on the ship, but since we were on our 25th anniversary cruise, I thought it would be a good time to do it. We went to the steakhouse on board and I can honestly tell you it was the best food I've ever had on a cruise ship, hands down. It is no secret that lines are revamping food items in MDR's to the point that items you traditionally received in the past are no longer available. Even if you do one pay restaurant, it is worth it if you really crave a good steak, seafood or ethnic fare.

Your advice about traveling when kids are in school is spot on. I traveled with my sister in December just after kids were out for the Christmas holiday on Carnival Vista. I was a nightmare - too many teens traveling with their families. I was hard to enjoy the buffet and outdoor spaces. Next time we will book when kids are still in school. Lesson learned.

The very real issue we had was that our commode suddenly wouldn't flush. We called and were serviced very quickly The problem is usually someone before you in the drain system has flushed something the clogged the drain. If you se a door outside of your cabin in the hallway, that's where the ships plumbers can access the line to clear a drain. I knew there had to be something like this, but had no idea where it was. Also, if you use a CPAP, the ship will provide you with distilled water.

My friend and I went on a Royal Carribean cruise last year and she was ruffied at the pool! She left her drink unattended for a minute to dip her feet, and it didn't take long to take effect. Luckily, I helped her back to the cabin. Lesson learned - if you leave your drink, don't drink it upon return. Order a new one!

The casinos usually have a self serve kiosk where you can cash out your player bank. Another useful note on Carnival you can put you card in the slot machine charge cash to your room with NO extra 3% fee. then cash out which goes on your player bank. You can then use that at the tables to play. Charging to the room at the table will cost you 3% of the charge. Great work by the by

Royal is for younger individuals who love physical activities and lots of entertainment. Carnival is for families and less physically active individuals. Why don’t you just tell people that they get what they pay for? Carnival Cruises are literally the “Walmart of Cruises.” Most of them have become very ghetto with the short 3-4 day cruises being the worst. The more expensive the cruise; the better clientele one can expect on the ship. There are always a few exceptions to that rule, but it is generally correct.
